What Is Faux Finishing?
Faux finishing is a specialized hand-painted technique that transforms plain fiberglass, steel, aluminum, or wood doors into rich, realistic wood-grain finishes, including mahogany, oak, cherry, walnut, and more. Instead of replacing your entry door or garage door with an expensive real-wood unit, we recreate the look of stained hardwood on the door you already have, at a fraction of the cost and with far better long-term durability in Florida’s climate.
The Process
Every faux finish is a multi-stage process, and each stage needs proper dry time before moving to the next. This is why the full job takes 1 to 3 days, depending on the size and number of doors.
- Surface Prep. Clean, sand, and prep the door to ensure proper adhesion and a smooth base.
- Base Coat. Apply a foundation color that will show through the grain layers.
- Graining and Wood-Look Application. Hand-tool the wood grain pattern using specialty brushes, combs, and glazes to mimic real wood texture, including knots, grain lines, and natural variation.
- Blending and Detail Work. Layer in depth, shadowing, and highlights so the finish reads as real wood from any angle.
- Protective Clear Coat. Seal the finish with a UV-resistant topcoat rated for exterior use. This is what makes the finish hold up to Florida sun.
- Cure Time. Final dry and cure time between coats and before the door is put back into regular use.
Rushing dry time is the number one cause of a faux finish looking flat or failing early. We do not skip stages.

Using UV-resistant, exterior-rated topcoats, the faux finish holds up very well to direct Florida sun without significant fading, chalking, or peeling.
